The narrow space between Supercripdom and Helplessness

Note: I have nothing at all bad to say about my work. It’s simply the nature of the business that it is busy, high volume stuff.

But add that to the Tooth That Must Be Pulled. and one finds oneself in need of stress reduction.

So, here’s my physically lazy Stress Reduction list. If one finds oneself opposite my tastes or politics then I encourage you to adapt as needed.

1. Watch “Gene Gene The Dancing Machine” on YouTube.

2. Listen to your music of choice. Mine tonight is Rhapsody In Blue

3. Watch Countdown on MSNBC

4. Daily Show, on Comedy Central same notation.

5. Exercise tape for 20 minutes in the privacy of my own home where no one sees me look that stupid.

6. Menu Plan

7. Garden (I don’t but several friends do)

8. Reorder your to do list to get the one you hate out of the way first.

9. Email a friend or family member who hasn’t heard from you in awhile.

10. Figure out which Congressperson to write/call next about [insert issue of concern here].

Yes, everyone can use a little Count Basie in her life (I think the “Gene Gene” music is “Jumping at the Woodside” but I wouldn’t swear to it). Incidentally, if you’re into free swing music, here’s a good url:

    http://www.tuxjunction.net/

The jukebox is always on. A related site (Palomar) provides downloads of original big band broadcasts. Too damn cool.

My most hated task is doing promotional appearances for an upcoming event. I have to do radio interviews (which I like) and TV (which I hate, for a variety of reasons, mostly the superficial nature of the interview questions…) Unfortunately, that’s not something I can bump ahead.

Today I’ll be driving Kid over hell and half of creation to go to three back-to-back events (all rescheduled due to the snowstorm). She can make all three, but only if I give up my entire night to get her there. I’ll have to plant a forest to offset the carbon emissions.

Sometimes I find flicking through a book or magazine with beautiful or inspirational pictures can really take me down several notches on the stress scale. Planet Earth, which accompanies the BBC series, is one such book. Also, screaming profanities loudly, and especially if in pain, is a quick if somewhat antisocial remedy. FUCK! Genuine jump out of skin moment! In the attic typing and just had a massive bolt of lightning and thunder out of the blue! Over and out and downstairs quick! Scary! It’s all happening here…

So sorry about yesterday’s strange interlude, but it really was a thunderbolt! There I was typing away and there was this almighty flash bang and then nothing more. We had a tornado start just down our road a year and a half ago. Unusual for the UK, but we seem to be in a freaky weather zone all of our own here in Birmingham. And there I was writing with hints for reducing stress!
