Everybody has predictions…

I say Romney will be the Republican nominee.  Regardless that both Romneycare and The Affordable Care Act require an individual mandate.  And regardless of how many Evangelicals are still made uncomfortable by Romney’s Mormonism.

Pawlenty will give him a run for his money.

I have no idea who either  will choose as VP.

Michelle Bachman might pull off a third party thing.  This would have been Sarah Palin’s niche a few months ago…it seems odd to see Michelle Bachman eclipsing her, but that’s what’s happening.

And Ron Paul’s fanbase will be a spoiler in the primaries, as per usual, and then they’ll choose to stand behind one of the remaining front runners.

Rick Santorum

Newt Gingrich

Sarah Palin

not actual contenders, in my opinion.

I would have been vastly entertained by a Palin/Bachmann ticket, but nobody’s playing this for it’s entertainment value.

Yes, Romney will be the candidate. The lesson of last election cycle and the midterms is that the issue is jobs and that there are a whole lot of center-right swing voters in the bigger states that get people elected. South and west wackadoos and zealots of either the Christian or Libertarian (or both) stripes make a lot of noise, but you can’t carry an election with a guy who can only win Arizona, Mississippi, and Alabama. The GOP will really have to flip a few of the bigger states and it’s going to have to be on the economy…the GOP will use the dogwhistle to keep the social hyper-cons in line, but the election will be won or lost on bread-and-butter (and to a lesser extent, on the ongoing impact of the war on our domestic programs).
