It’s that day…

September 5, 2009 at 4:07 PM (Uncategorized) (, , )

Matching exactly today. A Saturday September 5th.

And so only a couple of days a year are the days I feel torn in half. Literally A great improvement really… over the last 22 years.

I’m not ashamed to say that it’s days like this that I honestly just wish the *** my time here was done too. So I could just go hang with him, edit his sermons again while watching baseball or Star Trek. (Yes, there’s baseball and Trek in heaven now. I believe absolutely that he lobbied for it 🙂 )

I got married on this day in 1987. A slight scandal. A woman with cerebral palsy and a hemophiliac…Married? Heavens, what *is* the world coming to…

And lost him to one preexisting condition and one not so much five and a quarter years later.

He was an Evangelical pastor. He was a hemophilliac. He died of what they call now “HIV disease.”

I’m pretty sure I know which side of the healthcare *debate* he would have been on.

It wouldn’t have been the “use this as a game to win reelection’ strategy that seems to be permeating the halls of the West Wing lately…

Or the paranoia about “socialism!” “Hitler!” screamed by the right, even though not standing with the Religious Right would have cost him most of his friends.

He would have been on the side of every patient he ever visited as pastor. He would have been on the side of every doctor or nurse that helped him as a child and adult. He would have been on the side of anyone past or present dealing with AIDS or other lifetime chronic conditions…

“Some people just don’t get it,” he said in bemusement near the end of his life… “The Bible should *never* be used to hurt people.

“God isn’t a Republican. God isn’t a Democrat.

He’s just God.”

Amazing how people can’t cut through the B.S. and just look at things in a simplistic point of view (pardon me if spelling is wrong). Thank you for making me keep the belief that humanity can turn itself around.
